Country of origin: Portugal
Producer: Brites de Aguiar, Ltd.
Origin: Douro
They were born thanks to the special conditions of the place where the grapes are produced and quickly won over consumers. Bafarela 17 wines have positioned Casa Brites Aguiar as one of the most talked-about producers in the country. Bafarela 17 wines express the terroir. High in alcohol, but surprisingly fresh. Baron Forrester advocated wines like this…
Bafarela 17 wines are wines of passion. They are, in themselves, audacious. These wines have an alcohol content of 17% and are only made when the grapes are ripe enough. Above all, they are a telluric interpretation of their place of origin, a part of the Douro where, during grape ripening, the heat is stifling and water scarcity is a constant.
Grape varieties: Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and Tinta Barroca.
Winemaker: 2PR
Exam Notes
Color: Rich and loaded
Aroma: Intense ripe fruit notes with hints of chocolate and cocoa, as well as aromas of wild berries and flowers.
Taste: Full-bodied, it has firm tannins, but softened by the acidity, resulting in a fresh, balanced wine with a very long finish. Powerful on the palate, it's a wine that you chew on. And it impresses.
Pairing: Bafarela 17 Superior is a surprising wine that pairs very well with spicy dishes, particularly those from traditional Portuguese cuisine. With Serra da Estrela cheese, for example, the harmony is perfect.
Service: It should be opened slightly before consumption to allow it to breathe and develop optimally. Over time, it may develop sediment, requiring decanting. Serve between 15ºC and 16ºC.
Conservation: The bottle should be stored lying down in a cool, dry place, away from light.
Winemaking: The harvest took place in September. With careful selection in the vineyard, the grapes were fully destemmed and crushed. After pre-fermentation cold skin contact for 48 hours, fermentation took place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks with a total maceration of over 40 days, but without excessive extraction. The wine was then transferred to stainless steel tanks, where malolactic fermentation occurred, and then aged for 12 months in new French oak barrels (500 liters).
