Product: NIEPOORT VINTAGE PORT WINE 2019 0.75

Country of origin: Portugal

Producer: Niepoort (Wines) SA

Origin: Douro

After three consecutive years of low yields, 2019 saw a return to more balanced vineyard yields. Average rainfall was low during the winter months, but to compensate, throughout the year the Douro, and specifically the Cima Corgo sub-region, benefited from two factors: the fact that the summer months were exceptionally cold and, in addition, the rain on August 26/27 was very timely, allowing the fruit to finish ripening.

In Vale de Mendiz, the grape harvest began on September 2nd under good conditions, and the last grapes arrived in the first week of October.

Every year is remembered for distinct and unique reasons, and 2019 will certainly be remembered as a year with incredible natural musts, balanced acidity, and a very cool climate, recalling the elegant year of 2008 - the perfect conditions in which the Niepoort style flourishes!

Soil: Shale

Grape varieties: Touriga Franca, Tinto Cão, Tinta Francisca, Tinta Amarela, Sousão, Tinta Roriz and others

Winemaker: Dirk Niepoort

Exam Notes

Color: The appearance is marked by a wonderful dark purple border and a great depth of color.

Aroma: The aroma is delicate and moderate, with primary notes of dark fruits and some spices.

Palate: The true style and potential of this wine come together on the palate, with a wonderful integration of dark fruits and a grainy tannic structure; an extraordinary balance between volume and elegance, resulting in an impressive finish. In short, the primary fruit on the palate may be appealing at this stage, but it is the balanced tannic structure that indicates the great aging potential of this wine in the future.

Pairing: Perfect with Serra da Estrela cheese, Stilton, or other blue cheeses.

Preservation: balanced tannic structure indicating the great aging potential of this wine in the future.

Winemaking: All components of the 2019 Vintage were foot-trodden in granite lagares with 100% stems. The wines were racked shortly after the harvest, aging in the Douro Valley in barrels during the winter. They were subsequently transferred, in March 2020, to the cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia.
